What Are Common Causes of Brain Injuries in Aurora?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 1.7 and 3.8 million people in the United States sustain brain injuries each year. These life-changing injuries can happen in a variety of situations, often leaving victims with long-term consequences. In Aurora, our attorneys see brain injuries frequently occuring due to:
Auto Accidents
Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of brain injuries, often due to the sudden impact of a collision. The head might strike the steering wheel or another hard object, leading to a concussion or more severe traumatic brain injury. However, brain injuries can happen even without blunt force trauma. The violent impact of a car accident can cause the brain to bounce back and forth in the skull, damaging its delicate nerves and tissues.
Slip-and-Fall Accidents
Slip-and-fall incidents, especially on wet or uneven surfaces, can cause a person to strike their head on the ground or nearby objects. Slip and falls have the potential to cause life-threatening injuries due to brain bleeds and swelling.
Sports-Related Injuries
Playing contact sports like football, soccer, or hockey puts athletes at risk of repeated hits to the head. These impacts may lead to concussions or even chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a serious brain condition caused by repeated head injuries.
Bicycle Accidents
Bicyclists are highly vulnerable to head injuries in bicycle accidents. This is true in any case, especially if riders fail to wear helmets. A fall or collision with a vehicle can easily result in a TBI.
Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrians involved in collisions with vehicles are at a high risk of head injuries. When struck, pedestrians often hit the windshield, hood, or ground, causing severe brain trauma that requires intensive medical care.
What Are the Different Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries?
Brain injuries vary in severity and impact. Some of the most common types include:
- Concussions – A milder form of brain injury, concussions may cause confusion, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems.
- Contusions – Contusions are bruises on the brain that typically need medical treatment. Depending on their size and location, a contusion can cause life-threatening swelling and pressure inside the skull and require emergency surgery.
- Diffuse axonal injuries – These severe TBIs result from the brain moving rapidly within the skull, causing widespread damage. These injuries can disrupt brain function significantly, sometimes leading to coma or permanent disability.
- Penetrating injuries – These TBIs occur when an object pierces the skull, causing direct injury to the brain. Penetrating injuries can cause significant damage, increasing the risk of infection, seizures, or neurological deficits.
Each type of brain injury requires careful diagnosis and treatment to minimize long-term effects. Additionally, the type and severity of your brain injury can have a direct impact on your potential claim, so it is important to work with an Aurora attorney early in the process.
What Are the Symptoms of a Brain Injury?
Symptoms vary for brain injury victims but may include:
- Headaches or migraines
- Dizziness or balance issues
- Memory loss
- Cognitive deficits
- Mobility problems
- Impaired speech
- Mood swings or personality changes
- Sensitivity to light, noise, and temperature
- Loss of consciousness
- Coma
Seek medical attention immediately after an accident involving any kind of blow or jolt to the head. Brain injury symptoms may not show up right away, but the buildup of pressure inside the skull can make the damage worse.
What Are the Treatments for Brain Injuries?
Brain injury treatment varies based on the type and severity of the injury. Common treatments include:
- Rest and monitoring for mild injuries, such as concussions
- Medication to reduce swelling or prevent seizures
- Physical therapy
- Cognitive therapy
- Speech therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Surgery
Early intervention and comprehensive treatment are crucial for recovery. Documenting your treatment will strengthen your legal claim, so keep all medical records and accident-related receipts. This information can help an traumatic brain injury lawyer in Aurora calculate your losses if you file a brain injury claim.
