Types of Fractures
A fracture is a break or crack in a bone. Most fractures result from direct force applied to the bone, such as the impact of a car accident, a motorcycle crash, or a fall. Fractures of the arms and legs are the most common broken bones. Fractures vary in severity depending on the force of the impact. Fractures that break the skin are known as open fractures. Those that do not break the skin are closed fractures.
In older adults, fractures of the pelvis, spine and wrist are common, and the recovery may be more complicated.
The most common types of fractures include:
Stable Fracture — When the broken bones stay together and remain lined up.
Compound Fracture — Fragments of a broken bone may pierce the skin, creating an open, compound fracture. Compound fractures are serious because infection can develop in the open wound.
Displaced Fracture — When the bones break and move apart so that the ends are no longer lined up, the broken bone is known as a displaced fracture.
Comminuted Fracture — Some high-impact car accidents or falls may shatter bones into three or more pieces. Comminuted fractures are more common in older adults with brittle bones.
Oblique Fracture — This type of break involves an angled fracture. They occur most commonly in long bones such as the thigh bone or upper arm bone.
Transverse Fracture — A transverse fracture is a break perpendicular to the shaft of the bone. Transverse process fractures involve breaks in the bony projections where muscles and ligaments attach on the left and right sides of each vertebra and may occur as a result of back trauma.
Depressed Fractures — Head injuries may involve a skull fracture. When the bones of the skull are pressed inward, the fracture is known as a depressed fracture. This type of fracture is caused by blunt force trauma such as being struck by a rock or falling object or being kicked in the head.
Crushed Sternum — The impact of a crash may throw a driver or passenger into the steering wheel or dashboard, crushing the breastbone or sternum.
A fracture may take weeks or months to heal, depending on the type of fracture, its location, and the age of the accident victim. You may be unable to work or earn a paycheck, creating financial stress for you and your family. You should take advantage of all financial resources available to you. A Denver bone injury attorney can discuss whether you have a valid injury based on your accident.
Types of Fracture and Broken Bone Cases that Our Attorneys Handle
Many bone fractures occur because of the negligence of someone, such as a reckless driver who caused a crash or a property owner who failed to maintain a property in a safe condition. Some occur as a result of assaults or other acts of violence.
If you or your loved one sustained a broken bone as a result of either negligence or misconduct, you may be entitled by Colorado law to demand compensation to cover your medical bills and other losses, such as lost income from missed work.
Should I Accept a Broken Bone Settlement?
Before you accept a settlement offered by an insurance company, you should contact an experienced Denver broken bone attorney who can determine whether the settlement is fair and reasonable.
Insurance companies often make quick, lowball settlement offers to try to relieve themselves of liability for serious accidents. The insurance adjuster may tell you the settlement amount is the most the insurer can offer or pressure you to accept it. But don’t accept any offer without consulting with an experienced lawyer to discuss whether the offer is reasonable in light of the injury you sustained.
