Safety Precautions for Denver Pedestrians

Walking should not put you at risk of serious injury, but traffic conditions can make streets dangerous. Safety precautions for Denver pedestrians start with safer crossings and close attention to traffic signals. Staying alert can also help you spot drivers who fail to yield. If you sustained an injury while walking, an experienced pedestrian injury attorney from our team can protect your rights and pursue compensation.

At The Wilhite Law Firm, our decades of personal injury experience support every case we handle. We understand the risks pedestrians face on busy roads and act quickly when a preventable collision causes harm. Wilhite Wins.

Follow Crosswalk and Signal Rules

Pedestrian safety starts with understanding who has the right of way. Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, drivers must yield to pedestrians lawfully crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks when the pedestrian meets the statute’s conditions. Pedestrians must also avoid stepping suddenly into the path of a nearby vehicle and should yield when crossing outside a crosswalk where required by law.

For safer walking, use sidewalks when they are available and cross at intersections whenever possible. Follow pedestrian signals before entering the roadway, but do not assume a green light means turning drivers have seen you. Safety precautions are especially important when you are walking on busy Denver streets with multiple lanes or frequent turning movements. The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that 65 percent of pedestrian fatalities in 2024 occurred in darkness, highlighting the importance of staying visible after sunset.

How Can Pedestrians Reduce Their Risk?

Even when you have the right of way, defensive walking can help you avoid a crash. Denver’s Vision Zero program uses street-design changes and other safety precautions, such as high-visibility crosswalks, improved lighting, and median refuge islands, to protect pedestrians and reduce serious traffic injuries.

When walking on busy streets in the city, these steps can help reduce the risk of a pedestrian accident:

• Put your phone away before crossing
• Make eye contact with approaching or turning drivers
• Wear visible or reflective clothing in low light
• Avoid stepping between parked vehicles
• Watch for vehicles entering and leaving driveways
• Give large vehicles extra space because of blind spots

These precautions do not excuse negligent driving, and a driver remains responsible for following traffic laws. They must maintain a proper lookout, control their speed, and yield when required. If a motorist ignores those duties, we can investigate the collision and identify available insurance coverage and other sources of recovery.

Protect Your Rights After a Pedestrian Collision

Safety measures help prevent accidents, but if a vehicle hits you while you are walking in Denver you should get emergency help and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Following your treatment plan can support your recovery while helping document the harm the crash caused. If it is safe, preserve evidence from the scene and gather witness information that can help establish what happened.

Knowing what to do after a pedestrian accident can help protect your injury claim. Compensation can address the financial impact of the crash and the effect it has on your daily life. Fault can affect that recovery under Colo. Rev. Stat. § 13-21-111, which reduces compensation based on your share of negligence and bars recovery when your negligence is equal to or greater than the defendant’s. Acting early can help protect important evidence. We will handle the insurance issues while building a strong claim for the compensation available under state law.
