Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous of all types of motor vehicle accidents. They magnify the crash energy involved in a collision, resulting in more serious injuries. What Are The Top Causes of Head-On Collisions in Colorado?
Head-on collisions in Denver typically happen because a driver makes a serious driving error or misjudgment. These crashes can occur anywhere in Colorado, but they are more likely on rural, undivided highways where vehicles travel at higher speeds, and there is less margin for error if a vehicle suddenly veers across the center line. Front impact crashes occur less frequently than rear-end crashes and side-impact collisions.
Common driver errors contributing to head-on accidents include:
A driver may be distracted by a cell phone conversation, for example, and have their eyes off the road. The distracted driver may fail to notice the vehicle has crossed into an opposing lane of traffic, causing a frontal impact crash. Distracted driving contributes to many serious accidents in Colorado and is particularly prevalent among young drivers.
Drowsy drivers are also responsible for numerous head-on collisions. A driver who is fatigued and fighting to stay awake at the wheel may nod off and cross into an oncoming lane. Drowsy drivers have slowed responses and take longer to react to changes in road conditions.
Commercial truck drivers who drive for long periods of time are at risk of falling asleep at the wheel and causing head-on collisions if they do not take regular breaks and get adequate rest. A head-on collision between a tractor-trailer and an automobile can cause catastrophic injuries or fatal injuries to the occupants of the smaller vehicle.
A drunk driver may cause a head-on collision by speeding and losing control so that the vehicle crosses into an oncoming lane and collides with another vehicle.
Some head-on collisions are caused by wrong way drivers who are drunk, impaired or disoriented. Wrong-way driver accidents typically occur late at night and are caused by a driver who is highly intoxicated, impaired by drugs, or disoriented.
The personal injury lawyers at The Wilhite Law Firm will investigate your head-on collision and determine how the crash occurred and who should be held liable for your injuries.
What Compensation Can Head-On Accident Victims Seek?
Head-on accidents in Denver often cause traumatic injuries and require emergency medical treatment and periods of hospitalization. The medical expenses can add up quickly to tens of thousands of dollars.
If you were injured in a front impact accident and another driver caused the accident, you may demand compensation from the at-fault driver’s insurance for your expenses related to the crash, including your doctor and hospital bills, rehabilitation, and prescription medications. If your injuries will require ongoing and future medical care, you can also claim compensation for future medical care and other expenses related to the injury.
If the head-on accident leaves you disabled and unable to work for an extended period of time, you may seek compensation for your lost wages due to the injury.
You also may seek compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and post-traumatic stress related to the head-on accident.
If the driver who caused the head-on accident was acting with wanton disregard for safety, such as speeding the wrong way on I-25 while highly intoxicated, you may have a right to seek exemplary damages or punitive damages under Colorado law. Punitive damages may be sought in cases in which the conduct of the at-fault driver was extremely outrageous.
Colorado law permits families that have suffered the loss of a loved one in a head-on collision to file a lawsuit and seek compensation if the crash was caused by another driver’s carelessness or disregard for safety. The law allows close relatives of the accident victim, such as the spouse or dependent children, to file a wrongful death claim.
The time limit for filing a wrongful death lawsuit in Colorado is two years from the date of death.

How Can a Lawyer Help With My Case?
When you are involved in a devastating head-on crash, the physical, emotional, and financial toll can quickly feel completely overwhelming. Front-end car wrecks in Denver are universally recognized as some of the most violent and dangerous types of collisions on Colorado roadways, frequently resulting in catastrophic, life-altering injuries or even wrongful death.
Navigating the legal aftermath while recovering from severe trauma requires highly skilled legal intervention. A dedicated attorney from The Wilhite Law Firm takes the immense burden off your shoulders by managing every aspect of your complex legal claim.
Proving fault is absolutely vital, especially when dealing with distracted, drowsy, or wrong-way drivers. Your lawyer can act swiftly to secure critical evidence before it is destroyed or altered. This involves obtaining local traffic camera footage, downloading commercial vehicle black box data, retrieving official police accident reports, and interviewing key eyewitnesses.
The medical bills resulting from a front-end crash can accumulate rapidly and create immense financial strain. Your legal team will fight relentlessly for maximum compensation to cover your healthcare expenses, emergency room bills, future surgeries, lost wages, reduced earning capacity, and the extensive costs of long-term physical rehabilitation.
Insurance corporations are notorious for using predatory tactics to minimize their financial payouts. A skilled attorney can shield you from these insurance adjusters, preventing them from attempting to devalue your injury claim or unfairly shift the blame onto you. We handle all formal communications to ensure you receive a fair settlement that reflects the true extent of your losses.
Proving Liability for a Head-On Crash
Establishing fault in front-end car crash claims in Denver requires a comprehensive understanding of Colorado’s traffic laws and personal injury statutes. While it might seem entirely obvious to you that the driver who crossed the center yellow line or traveled the wrong way down a one-way street is completely to blame, opposing insurance companies will still actively look for ways to complicate the claim.
Proving liability legally involves demonstrating that the other motorist breached their duty of care to keep others safe on the road. To establish clear, undeniable liability against a negligent motorist, our legal team frequently relies on:
- Accident reconstruction experts: We collaborate with forensic engineers who carefully analyze skid marks, vehicle crush patterns, and highway debris fields to scientifically prove how the impact occurred.
- Electronic and digital evidence: Cell phone records can prove a driver was actively texting, while toxicology reports can establish legal impairment from alcohol or prescription drugs at the exact time of the front-end impact.
- Colorado’s traffic codes: Citing specific violations, such as failing to yield, illegal passing, or reckless driving, creates a powerful foundation for your negligence claim.
Under Colorado’s modified comparative negligence system, the insurance company may try to argue that you were partially responsible for the crash to reduce their final payout. If they successfully argue you carry a percentage of fault, your final compensation is reduced by that exact amount. If your fault reaches 50% or higher, you are barred from recovering any damages at all.
You must act within Colorado’s strict three-year statute of limitations for motor vehicle accidents. Waiting too long can permanently bar you from seeking justice. By building an airtight liability case from day one, your attorney forces the insurance company to recognize the true value of your claim and prevents them from escaping their financial obligations.
